THE HUNT FOR GREEN DECEMBER | GETTING THE RIGHT CHRISTMAS TREE

My family has faked it for the last few years and I’m not proud of it.  It’s been over 4 years since a live evergreen has made it into our living room for Christmas. This year my brother and I have managed to end that horrible artificial nonsense. There is nothing like coming home to sit next to a brightly lit Christmas tree, drink hot coa-coa, and warm yourself by a fire . Sure, an artificial christmas tree is easy to setup, doesn’t leave a trail of pine needles, and refrains from covering you in sappy goop, but who cares. There is nothing like the fresh smell of a christmas tree and the risk of it going up in flames because it’s right beside the fireplace to get into the Christmas spirit. This year we put our foot down. No artificial nonsense. We were going on a search. A search for the perfect Christmas tree. One for the ages.

I’m sure pretty much everyone reading this has seen Christmas Vacation and will quote it at least 40 times this holiday season. My dad is Clark Griswald. He spent all day Wednesday putting up the lights and getting the decorations out of storage (he didn’t get locked in the attic, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if it happened). Unfortunately, he couldn’t come with us to get the tree this year; which is probably best because we might have ended up with a 20 ft tree with a squirrel camped out waiting to attack. We did channel some of my dad/Clark Griswald on our hunt for the perfect tree, though. Naturally, we hiked miles into the very back of the lot…where no reasonable person would bother to go. We probably could have found a perfectly suitable tree in the first ten minutes, but that just wouldn’t be appropriate. We owed it to the trees we have neglected in the past couple of years to pour our sweat and hard work into the search effort. And it payed off: “Thith tree is a thymbol of the thspirit of the Zarichnak family Chrithmath.”
