It’s hard to pick one thing to write about after a wedding like this. There are so many defining moments that it can’t be encompassed into just one. Do I write about Brittany’s father who adores all of his ladies in the family seeing his daughter for the first time on her wedding day. Do I write about about the hilarious and heartfelt speech delivered from Lew’s best man Jacko? Or do I write about all the amazingingly ridiculous, good natured, charming as hell people from England that flew across the pond to celebrate with these two love birds that are smitten for each other. I don’t know….So instead of trying to write about everything at once, which would no doubt give me carpel tunnel at an early age I will write about a moment that I thought was particularly special.
The wedding was over. The gear put away and memory cards safely inside their cases. Brittany and Lew invited Abbey and I to have a beer with them at their afer-party and we happily obliged. Almost instantaneously after we sat down Jacko emerged with an newly opened bottle of whisky in his hand and a cheeky grin on his face. He let Brittany and Lew know that there was one more thing to do before they got to make their way to the top floor of the hotel to retire. Ab and I followed the group of Brittany and Lew’s closest friends and family (at least those who braved the hours past midnight) to the hallway for one last tradition.
Now as an aside I would like to take a moment and say I love traditions. Maybe not so much the commonplace ones that everyone knows about and incorporates, but those traditions that are held dear to smaller groups who value their sacred nature and proudly show them off whenever appropriate. So seeing this new tradition was quite entertaining for me to watch.
Brittany and Lew stood in the center of a circle amongst family and friends. The bottle of whisky was graciously given to the first person and they proceeded to tell a fond/embarrassing/lovely story about the couple. After they were finished they tipped the whiskey bottle to the air and took a swig before passing it along to the person to their right. As the bottle was past along I got to hear some pretty terriffic stories. Some made you laugh, some made tears build at the corner of your eyes, and some were a little bit of everything. It’s always heartwarming to see people care about the people in their lives as much as you do in yours and this was one of those special moments. At the end it was Brittany and Lew’s turn to tell a story about each other. The night ended with Brittany and Lew having to finish the rest of the whiskey (god bless them) and saying goodnight to all their friends.
