This past weekend Abbey and I ventured down south to to visit her sister, Jackie, in Kentucky. We were excited to explore Lexington for the first time, and after getting a tour of the town set out to experience an authentic time in the Bluegrass State. What better way is there to have an authentic Kentucky experience than to go to one of it’s most famous distilleries…. Makers Mark.  It’s hard not to get lost trying to find the place. Siri took us through the back roads of Kentucky that would be better used on horseback than in an Acura. Once we got to the distillery one of the most striking characteristics was  its ability to hold onto its handcrafted authenticity. There is no factory with hundreds of noisy workers hurrying about. There is barely any noise at all. Instead you are greeted by a picturesque farm and a staff that enjoys nothing more than telling you all about their bourbon and how to enjoy it best. The distillery itself goes against America’s notion of more is better and efficiency trumps all. They put love into every bottle and believe that doing things the long way with love and care is the better way. Something that I strongly believe in for my business and myself. It’s hard to be convinced that all of the Makers Mark in the world comes from a small farm tucked away in a valley in the Kentucky countryside but it does, and that’s why it is so darn awesome.
